At the same time, the clear lines of the side tables ensure visual lightness and a modern look. The perfect addition to any home that is furnished with high design standards. In the following guide, you will learn more about the production of the newly released designer tables by janEven and what is important when choosing an ideal occasional table.

Useful Information on Side Tables:

High-quality and Sustainable Side Table Material
Metal, Wood, Glass or Marble?

Robust and sustainable side tables

Before the first side table by janEven was made, the material was carefully selected. It was not only important to the designer to create tables that looked appealing. It was also essential that the manufacturing process be as sustainable as possible and that each individual side table meet the highest standards of stability and robustness. The vision of the German-Norwegian is based on the philosophy of Scandinavian design. The aim is to design functional furniture that adds a cosy touch to any home. The result: Practical side tables without superfluous frills with a puristic, functional design. Similar to the Bauhaus style.

Demands Placed on the Tabletop Materials

Visually, the tabletop of janEven side tables was meant to look light and elegant. However, this did not mean that the living room tables would be less resilient than furniture made of solid material. The top of the small coffee tables therefore needed to be wafer-thin but robust. Elegant and sturdy at the same time. This apparent contradiction could only be solved with a well thought-out combination of two layers. An HPL top layer with a discreetly concealed substructure made of birch plywood.

Designer side table with an elegant HPL surface

The acronym HPL comes from the term "High Pressure" and describes sheets that consist of about 70% wood fibres and are coated with a phenol or melamine resin layer. The name was derived from the pressing process of the wood fibres, which is carried out under very high pressure and at extreme temperatures. Each janEven side table is available with an HPL top in pure white, a light shade of grey as well as noble anthracite. Regardless of the colour chosen, the HPL table top has a stylishly chamfered outer edge with a modern bevel and carefully butted corners. The black edge of the side tables is created by the high-quality wood fibre core of the sustainable material that emerges between the coloured surfaces.

Advantages of the HPL side table top:

  • Sustainability: Since the upper tabletop of the designer side tables is made of wood that naturally grows back, the material is praised as being environmentally friendly and sustainable.
  • Dirt repellency: HPL sheets have a high molecular density, which makes the coffee table by janEven quite dirt-resistant and easy to clean. After all, dirt doesn't really stick to the material in the first place.
  • Impact and scratch resistance: The special nature of the HPL surface also makes the stylish side table very scratch-resistant. An extremely high point load is required to actually damage the noble tabletop.
  • Colour fastness: Unlike some materials whose surfaces lose their colour over time due to exposure to light, the HPL panels of the janEven side tables retain an unaltered appearance for a long time.

Robust side table with birch plywood substructure

As the name suggests, a birch plywood board is made up of several layers of wood. The at least five "solid veneers" of equal thickness are cross-bonded, which gives the tabletop even greater stability. Each wood layer has a maximum thickness of 5 mm. As a result, a birch plywood board can be between 12 and 80 mm thick. Designer side tables by janEven have a discreet substructure made of 15 mm thick birch plywood. This is concealed under the decorative HPL panel in order to preserve the delicate look of the tabletop. Although the birch wood board is discreetly fitted, the effect of the resilient material is immediately noticeable. In fact, the substructure ensures that the low occasional table is extremely robust and stable.

Advantages of the sofa tables with birch plywood tabletop:

  • Light weight: The sturdily layered substructure is very light, which makes it easier to transport the side table.
  • High stability and load-bearing capacity: Thanks to cross-bonding at a 90° angle, the direction of the fibres changes with each layer. This is exactly what makes the plywood top and thus the designer table by janEven highly stable and resilient.
  • Dimensional stability: The special construction of the boards also protects the side table from material deformation. Neither humidity nor strong temperature fluctuations affect the shape of the plywood top.

Other Material that is Often Used for the Production of Side Tables

Wood: Natural wood is a popular material for the production of all kinds of furniture. If the tabletop of a side table is made of wood, it is often very durable and impact-resistant. This is especially true for tables made of solid wood. Depending on the type of wood chosen, however, such a coffee table is not always easy to maintain. If you don't follow the necessary steps, you can quickly end up with undesired signs of wear and tear and permanent discolouration.

Among other types of wood, the following are popular for the production of various tables:

  • Solid wood
  • Beech / Beech heartwood
  • Oak / wild oak / oak wood appearance
  • Walnut
  • Acacia
  • Pallet (in Germany mostly made of birch, spruce or pine)
  • Teak
  • Bamboo (considered to be woody grass)
  • Mango wood
  • Maple

Stone: If you are looking for a side table with a long life, a stone table is a good choice. The most popular type of natural stone for tabletops is granite. This is partly because the type of stone is very durable and insensitive to temperature fluctuations. Marble storage tables are also widely used and immediately catch the eye thanks to their uniquely elegant appearance. The maintenance of a stone table is similar to that of a wooden table. This includes the timely treatment of hairline cracks, for example, to prevent frost-induced fractures in the tabletop (important for outdoor tables). With stone tables, however, it is often sufficient to use the special care product only once a year. If you buy a stone side table, you should take into account the comparably high weight of the products. This means that it is not very easy to move the side table out of the way when you rearrange the furniture or would like to clean the floor.

Metal: In various furniture stores and online shops, you can buy side tables made of metal. Whether only the frame is made of the material together with a tabletop made of glass or wood, or the table is completely made of metal, the surfaces made of this material are usually easy to clean and resistant. Metal side tables are even protected against cold, heat and fire. However, if a side table is made entirely of the silver material, it often looks cool and sterile. Shiny metal in particular is also susceptible to fingerprints and must therefore be cared for / cleaned regularly.

The following metal is often used to make tables:

  • Iron
  • Stainless steel
  • Copper
  • Chrome
  • Aluminium
  • Brass

Glass: A side table made of glass has two design advantages: On the one hand, the transparent material ensures that the table does not take up so much space visually. If a side table is transparent, smaller rooms immediately appear a little more spacious. On the other hand, a glass table can look very classy. Without regular care with glass cleaner, however, the table is prone to fingerprints and streaks. This is especially noticeable when the light or the sun's rays fall directly on the glass tabletop. Coasters are also a must-have accessory for glass tables. Because not even a coffee table made of safety glass is really safe from scratches or other signs of use. Although coffee tables made of acrylic or Plexiglas are considered more robust and shatterproof than real glass, they are at least equally susceptible to scratches due to their soft surface.

High-gloss / lacquered: If you search online for high-gloss side tables, you will find many tables in white. The glossy surface of these coffee tables is achieved thanks to a special lacquer. Like glass tables, lacquered side tables are more susceptible to wear marks and scratches than, for example, matt-finished products. For this reason, only extremely soft cloths should be used to care for a high-gloss tabletop. However, if coarse dust gets between the cloth and the lacquered surface, small scratches can occur. Nevertheless, a high-gloss occasional table must be cleaned regularly, otherwise the special look will quickly lose its appeal due to fingerprints and smudges. It is also not advisable to combine multiple pieces of lacquered furniture in one room, as this could make the overall look a little tacky.

Plastic: A side table made of plastic can be bought quite cheaply in many furniture shops. In contrast to more stylish coffee tables made of glass or wood, products made of plastic are considered particularly easy to clean. A mini table made of coloured plastic is a popular choice, especially in children's / teenagers' rooms. This is because it can be chosen in a look that matches the decor and is not easily damaged by small, zealous children's hands. However, it is worth inspecting plastic occasional tables in person before buying them. Cheap plastic products often look anything but high-quality, which is not necessarily visible when looking at product pictures.

Ceramic: The cold and heat resistance of a ceramic side table makes it an excellent coffee table. This is because cups with hot liquid can be placed directly on the tabletop without the need for a coaster. Without leaving any permanent rings. Other advantages of a side table made of ceramic are its easy maintenance, impact resistance and water repellency. On the other hand, the high weight of such a side table is considered a disadvantage. This makes transporting the decorative tables somewhat more problematic.

Rattan: Another natural product that is often used to make side tables is rattan. Compared to other raw materials, the material grows back very quickly. If pieces of furniture are produced from the sustainable material, they feature a light weight and at the same time high stability. Nevertheless, coffee tables and bedside tables made of this material need to be replaced after a while. After prolonged use of the furniture, the surface usually becomes brittle and starts to turn grey. This is not the case with artificial polyrattan, as the material remains elastic even after a long time and is even weather-resistant. However, the material is not as environmentally friendly as its natural counterpart.

Concrete: Side tables with a concrete look are becoming more and more trendy. The special design in grey often has a similar look as a stone table. Some outdoor side tables are really made of mixed concrete. For indoor use, however, there are numerous parlour tables available that are made of wood-based material with a mere concrete look. The weight of such tables is lower than tables made of actual concrete, but the imitation products lack robustness and resilience.

What to Consider when Buying a Side Table for Your Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen or Bathroom?

Living Room Table Selection

Depending on the purpose for which you need a side table in the living room, you should consider various aspects when making your purchase decision. If the small table is intended as a coffee table in front of a 2 - 3 seater, it should be at most a third to half as wide as the sofa. In any case, a 45 cm gap between the seating furniture and the sofa table is necessary to guarantee sufficient space for walking. A span of 40 cm - 50 cm in height is considered the optimal size for a coffee table. Ideally, the tabletop should be about as high as the seat of your couch or armchair. If the table is to be placed beside the armrest of the sofa, e.g. in the corner between two couches set up in an L-shape, a tabletop at the same height as the armrest is recommended. This makes it easy to switch on your reading lamp or put down your glass of water without having to bend down.

Bedside Table in the Bedroom

It doesn't matter whether it's a designer bedside table with graceful hairpin legs or a night console with practical drawers: The height of a side table in the bedroom should be coordinated with the height of your mattress. This way you can switch off the alarm clock, for example, without too much effort and start the day in a relaxed mood. You can also easily reach your bedside lamp at bed height so that you don't have to stretch too hard to switch off the light for the night. If you are looking for a foldable tray as a serving table for your bed / care bed, there are other important criteria. For use as a breakfast tray, the table should be made of a water-repellent, wipeable material. An encircling edge is also ideal, e.g. to prevent spilled juice from dripping into your lap.

A Side Table for Your Kitchen / Dining Room

A popular type of side table for use in the kitchen and dining room is a serving trolley. This side table with castors usually has a tray as a tabletop to transport drinks and food safely from one room to the next. Most kitchen trolleys also have additional drawers and compartments as well as a container for cutlery. The size and height of the small, mobile table depends on the planned use. If the side table is to serve as an extension of your countertop for preparing food and drinks, a table of the same height as the countertop is recommended. Otherwise, it is considered ideal to buy a serving trolley at waist height so that you can arrange drinks and snacks comfortably and the trolley can be pushed easily. If the serving table is likely to be used by different people, it can therefore be helpful if it is height-adjustable. However, the side table on wheels should not be too large or wide so that it can be easily stored when not in use. Folding serving trolleys are a practical alternative. Of course, other types of side tables are also used in the kitchen and dining room. For example, a space-saving, folding side table on the wall or small designer tables to display decorations or plants. The latter can be chosen freely based on personal preference, because it is only a matter of appearance.

Bathroom Table

Especially in the bathroom, a small side table can be extremely practical. A chest table, for example, offers a storage surface for towels or clean clothes, while it can also be used as a laundry basket. Multifunctional and space-saving. Thanks to the storage table, you also have everything at hand that you need for a relaxing evening in the bathtub. Be it a glass of your favourite wine or a captivating book. You have the choice between a bath tray, which can be flexibly adapted to the width of your tub, and a separate side table. In the latter case, the height of the small table should be matched to the upper edge of your bathtub. When choosing the material, you should bear in mind that the side table will be exposed to high humidity. An untreated wooden table is therefore out of the question.

Side Table in the Hallway / Corridor

In the entrance area of your home, various side tables can make everyday life easier. Keys, wallets and the like can be ideally placed on a console table (sometimes also called a telephone table) with a maximum height of approx. 90 cm. An additional drawer can be practical for storing gloves and scarves in the cold time of the year. Since it is often more comfortable to put on and take off shoes while sitting, there are occasional tables with storage space that can also be used as a bench. According to the standard (ISO 5970), the optimum height of such seating furniture is about 46 cm. In the hallway or entrance area, a small flower table can also be used as a decorative eye-catcher. Such a designer side table does not have to have ergonomic dimensions, as there is no active, physical use. The size can therefore be freely determined according to taste and appearance.

Office Table

If you are looking for a side table as an extension to your desk, the height should logically be based on the existing work surface. For a desk, the height is usually between 66 and 75 cm. If there is a sofa in the office for which you need a coffee table, the ideal height of the tabletop depends on the seat. As a rule, a sofa table with a height of 40 cm - 50 cm is considered comfortable. Designer tables for displaying decorations add a little cosiness to the office so that you always feel comfortable when working. In this case, the dimensions are fairly irrelevant as long as the table looks nice and doesn't take up too much space.

Side Table for Outdoor Use

For outdoor use, a weatherproof side table is needed. You certainly don't want to have to move the table into the house or shed after every use. And regardless of whether it is a semi-protected terrace, a covered balcony or an open garden - the side table will be exposed to at least a few raindrops eventually. The material and the finish of the surfaces should therefore be carefully considered when buying your side table. The ideal height of an outdoor mini table depends, of course, on the intended use. A barbecue table or barbecue trolley on wheels is a must-have for all those who like to prepare meat in their outdoor area during summer. A side table with a height of about 90 cm is ideal for barbecuing. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a coffee table for relaxing afternoons on the sunbed, a lower model is the right choice. Drinks and magazines are within easy reach from your sun lounger on a side table with a height of about 30 - 50 cm. The dimensions of the table should match the respective sunbed, which is why this furniture is often sold together in a set of 2.

Choosing a Suitable Side Table Design

The Ideal Shape of a Side Table: Round or Square?

The basic shape you choose largely determines the effect your side table will have on the room. Whether angular and modern or round with a soft look, it should ideally be coordinated with the rest of your furniture.

janEven designer side table - angular and puristic: Both the small side tables and the somewhat larger coffee tables by janEven have an angular design. The straight lines and clear contours lend the designer tables a puristic, modern look. Unadorned and with a sleek silhouette, the tables appear light and elegant. They contribute to a visual calm in the room, creating a cosy atmosphere. Timeless and elegant. The more spacious the room and the more people will be seated at the sofa table, the larger the tabletop should be. Instead of a small, square side table, it is worth buying a longer, rectangular-shaped model.

Side table with a round or oval shape: On the one hand, round side tables are often used to create a soft look with their curved edges. On the other hand, they offer a welcome contrast to your other items of furniture, that are usually mostly angular. Visually, the curves of the tabletop also create momentum and movement in the room. The visually soft and dynamic design of round mini tables is not the only advantage. Parents of babies and toddlers also appreciate tables without corners for safety reasons. Oval side tables also offer these benefits, but with their elongated shape they often have a larger diameter and thus provide more space for your guests.

Which Colour Side Table Suits Which Interior?

Side table in white: White designer tables look fresh and puristic and contribute to a visual order with their light surface. Since it is a neutral tone, it can be combined with bold colours such as red, green or blue without making the decor look restless. Together with cream and metallic tones such as gold and silver or furniture with a mirror design, white looks particularly stylish. A contrast with black, on the other hand, creates an exciting visual tension that lends the room a touch of modernity.

Light grey: Light grey is considered a timeless, discreet colour that can be combined naturally with wood tones. Like white, grey is also one of the few colours that can be easily paired with bold tones such as red or turquoise. Together with violet design elements, a side table in grey also creates an incomparably elegant overall look.

Anthracite: The dark shade of grey lends true class to furniture pieces such as side tables. Natural colours such as light green or a wood look breathe a little life into this mysterious shade. A combination with white, on the other hand, looks minimalist, modern and clean. You can achieve visual warmth with design elements in yellow or brown, while the colour pink adds a romantic touch.

Buy a Side Table to Match the Style of Your Furniture
Bauhaus Functionality with Scandinavian Charm

From the initial design to the production of each janEven side table, highest standards of design, quality and sustainability apply. The resulting tables therefore do not conform to any single interior decorating style. Rather, the principles behind the side tables lead to end products that unite several design trends at the same time, both visually and in terms of their basic idea. In classic Scandinavian style, the side tables are made in harmony with nature. Environmentally friendly material is used, most of which can be recycled. Since the coffee tables are not only stylish and elegant, but above all highly functional and practical, it is not surprising that they also visually lean towards Bauhaus style. Their clean lines with clear contours have an extremely puristic and modern effect.

janEven sofa tables can usually be ideally integrated into homes with following furnishing styles:

Country house style:

In the course of the 17th century, cottage / country house style was born. At the time, more and more wealthy families acquired a second residence in the countryside as a kind of weekend home or holiday retreat. And still today, in our hectic, fast-moving times, many long for a cosy haven where they can unwind. A home in country house style is just the right place to relax. Natural materials and rustic elements are used to create a tranquil oasis. The design direction is often enriched with a Nordic charm that harmonises ideally with the Scandinavian-inspired side table by janEven. If your interior is characterised by dark natural wood, the high-quality designer side table in white offers a pleasant break in colour.

Modern:

There is no single interior style that can be described as modern. Instead, numerous trends have developed over the years that can be found in many modern homes. The used look, for example, was derived from authentic antique and vintage furniture. The historical industrial direction has given birth to the cool loft style of today. And the Green Living attitude stems from the steadily growing environmental awareness of the population. Thanks to their sustainable construction with puristic, clear lines, the side tables by janEven fit best into environmentally friendly homes or flats in a loft design.

Industrial:

As mentioned above, modern loft style was inspired by classic industrial style. This exciting design trend originated in New York in the 1940s. During this period, attics and factories were transformed into flats, which were characterised by high ceilings and unplastered walls. This casual look can be ideally combined with the janEven side table in grey or anthracite.

Vintage:

Old furniture that dates from the 1920s - 1970s may be referred to as "vintage". The original pieces with charming traces of use and striking shapes lend every home an extraordinary flair. However, since the popular individual pieces sometimes have a rather high price, more and more imitation products in a used look or shabby chic design are emerging on the market. There is a clear trend towards vintage furniture by Scandinavian designers, with which the modern side table by janEven can be ideally combined.

Art Nouveau:

Art Nouveau has been around since the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. The design direction was shaped by the longing for a return to nature that was prevalent at the time. Humankind and the environment were to be brought back into harmony, which led to the emergence of nature-inspired furniture with curved shapes and adornments. The ornamental pieces of furniture can be ideally combined with puristic, modern items such as the stylish side table by janEven.

janEven Table Legs: Sturdy Side Tables with Sustainable Hairpin Legs or a Stainless Steel Frame

The side table by designer janEven is available in different sizes with different table legs.

Stainless steel runners:

The metal frame made of stainless steel has a highly stylish and timeless look thanks to its lightly brushed surface. Inspired by the Bauhaus style, the base of the side tables is characterised by clear lines. This enhances the extremely puristic and modern look of the designer tables. In addition to the tangible advantages (stability, rust resistance), there are further reasons why janEven has chosen this type of metal for the frame. One of the main reasons is the sustainability of this refined raw material. Far less energy is needed to produce stainless steel in comparison to aluminium or plastic. In addition, the majority of the stainless steel in use today is made up of more than 50% recycled steel. When the time comes to dispose of the robust, durable material, in most cases it can be fully recycled itself. Highly sustainable - up to the end of its life cycle.

Hairpin legs:

The ultra-slim table legs in a hairpin design are made of powder-coated steel struts. It is not only their resistance to rust that speaks for this choice of surface finish. In contrast to conventional wet varnishing, powder coating is also considered to be more environmentally friendly. This is because the process is carried out without solvents. This is entirely in line with the Scandinavian style, which is strongly aligned with nature and is considered the main inspiration for the janEven side table collection. The appearance of the graceful hairpin legs also has a Scandinavian touch. With a gentle slant, their shape resembles the wooden legs of Nordic furniture. Thanks to their slightly angled legs, the low coffee tables also benefit from even more stability. With their elegant finish in black, the metal legs of the mini tables look extremely light and graceful. When you buy a janEven side table with a hairpin frame, a set of matching floor protectors for sensitive surfaces is included. The useful accessories provide additional safety without detracting from the elegant look of the designer tables.
